When we tell people that we are working in Burkina Faso, the response is nearly always "which country is that in?" Well, it's a country in its own right, of course. It's in West Africa, surrounded by Niger, Benin, Togo, Ghana, Ivory Coast and Mali. It's a very poor nation, ranked third poorest in the world, and our work is in Gorom Gorom, in the far North, which is the poorest part of Burkina.
We were invited to visit by Keith Smith, who is a missionary in Gorum, working with the Fulani tribespeople. He has his own website, which is well worth a visit at:
http://www.undertheacacias-blog.org.uk/.
Pete & Maggie have now made two trips to Gorom Gorom, and feel that God has blessed us enormously and taught us some tremendous things during our times there.
During our first visit, in January 2007, we met lots of local people, visited families living in the dunes of the Sahel, slept under the stars, preached and generally learned that we know nothing!
During the second visit, in August 2007, we worked at a camp for children. We were expecting one hundred, but over 250 turned up. That was great, however, because we had the joy of spending all our days working with the local Muslim children, and then speaking to the whole crowd in the evenings.
August is the rainy season in Burkina, so we had some fairly challenging conditions to deal with. In fact there was a real doubt about whether we would be able to get back to the capital city due to serious flooding. Every cloud, however, really does have a silver lining and our discomfort on a very long detour through the bush is nothing compared to the importance of the rains to a good harvest.
Over the next few years, God wiling, we will continue to work with Keith in Burkina. We hope to be involved in another camp, and are part of a team from Glenwood Church in Cardiff, who are planning all sorts of exciting things in support of the Fulani people in Gorom Gorom.
